Any surgery carries an element of risk, and the same applies for tummy tuck surgery. Although serious complications from tummy tuck surgery are not common, any plastic surgeon would be remiss to say that there were NO risks.

There are different types of tummy tucks surgery procedures, most commonly are full and mini tummy tucks.

Is it Safe to Get Pregnant After Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Following tummy tuck surgery, it is completely safe to become pregnant. Many women have pregnancies after an abdominoplasty, however, some of work on tightening the muscles and flattening of the abdomen area may be undone by the pregnancy. The procedure could be repeated post-pregnancy, but most women do not want to go through the entire experience all over again.

What is the Difference Between a Full and Mini Tummy Tuck?

A full abdominoplasty is where there is a hip-to-hip incision and a lot of skin is removed. A mini-abdominoplasty is performed through your c-section scar and only a little or no skin is removed but the abdominal wall muscles are tightened.

There is a difference in price of about $2000 to $4000 with a full abdominoplasty costing from $6000 to $8000.

A mini tummy tuck, or partial abdominoplasty, may be recommended for patients that are within 10% of their ideal body weight. This procedure is less invasive and can be done on an outpatient basis. A mini tummy tuck leaves the navel intact and requires a smaller incision. Liposuction is sometimes employed and the fat is removed from below the navel, tightening muscles from the navel to the pubis.

If your abdominal muscles require more extensive tightening and your body weight is more than 20% above your ideal weight, your plastic surgeon is more likely to recommend a full abdominoplasty. How Long Does it Take to Recover From Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Recovering from tummy tuck surgery takes time and patience. Tummy tuck surgery, especially full tummy tuck surgery, is serious surgery. The abdominal muscles need time to heal without being used for extended periods of time. It may sound simple, but you’ve probably never realized how often you use your abdominal muscles during every day activities. Everyone’s recovery period is different, but you can expect to dedicate up to 8 weeks for full recovery. You will not be completely immobilized during those 8 weeks however.

Immediately following your tummy tuck surgery, you will be feeling groggy and tired from the anesthesia. Much of the first day or two is usually spent resting or sleeping. Your abdomen may be swollen and painful; it is good to start your pain medication right away, even if the pain is tolerable at first.

The first part of recovery involves a subsiding of swelling and pain. Bruises may appear but these will go away as well and are normal. Over the course of the next few days, you will have post-operative instructions to follow for caring for your incision site. Your surgeon will instruct you on how to change your incision dressings as well as how often. It is critical to keep this area clean. Your movement and activity will be very limited for the first few days. Showering or bathing will also be restricted; your surgeon will instruct you.

During tummy tuck surgery, some of your nerves are cut—therefore the skin on your abdomen may feel numb. Again, this is normal and sensation will return over the next few months during the healing process.

Scaring is also a normal part of surgery and your tummy tuck scars will become lighter and flatter over time.

What is a tummy tuck?

Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.

A tummy tuck is beneficial for those who have experienced massive weight loss, or for women who have lost the elasticity in their skin and abdominal muscles due to multiple pregnancies. In these cases the abdominals are unable to return to their natural shape after they have been stretched beyond their capacity, regardless of diet and exercise programs.

Who is a Candidate for Tummy Tuck Surgery?

The ideal candidates for tummy tuck surgery are patients already in relatively good physical health, but have excess skin or fat in the abdominal area that is resistant to diet and exercise.

The normal aging process can also cause skin to sag or lose elasticity, making many older patients excellent tummy tuck candidates. Tummy tuck surgery is not for those who have a little excess fat that they wish to remove. Tummy tuck surgery is best suited to remove larger amounts of loose and sagging skin and to help tighten abdominal muscles that have lost their elasticity.

For smaller areas of stubborn fat, liposuction can provide excellent results.

What to Expect During Your Tummy Tuck

Complete abdominoplasty usually takes two to three hours, depending on the extent of work required. Most commonly, the surgeon will make an incision just above the pubic area. A second incision is made to free the navel from surrounding tissue. With partial abdominoplasty, the incision is much shorter and the navel may not be moved.

Next, the surgeon separates the skin from the abdominal wall all the way up to your ribs and lifts a large skin flap to reveal the vertical muscles in your abdomen. These muscles are tightened by pulling them close together and stitching them into their new position. The skin flap is then stretched down and the extra skin is removed. A new hole is cut for your navel, which is then stitched in place. Finally, the incisions will be stitched, dressings will be applied, and two temporary tubes may be inserted to drain excess fluid from the surgical site. In partial abdominoplasty, the skin is separated only between the incision line and the navel. This skin flap is stretched down, the excess is removed, and the flap is stitched back into place.
For the first few days, your abdomen will probably be swollen and you are likely to feel some discomfort, which can be controlled by medication. Depending on the extent of the surgery, you may be released within a few hours or you may have to remain hospitalized for two to three days.

Under the Muscle Breast Augmentation

If you’re considering breast augmentation, you’ve undoubtedly been wondering whether you should have your implants placed over or under the muscle.

In my previous blog, I discussed the pros and cons of over the muscle breast augmentation. Below, I will discuss under the muscle breast augmentation.

One of the determining factors in deciding where to place a breast implant is the shape desired by the patient. The relationship of the implant to the pectoralis muscle causes varying degrees of shapes.

Advantages of placing a breast implant completely behind the muscle include a more natural breast shape (as opposed to a rounder shape achieved by placing the implant over the muscle), low interference with mammograms, little to no implant visibility, a reduced risk of capsule contracture, little to no rippling, and no visible scars on the breast (the incisions are made at the anterior axillary fold- under the breast).

Disadvantages of under the muscle breast augmentation include slightly more post-op discomfort and difficulty finding a surgeon completely competent in this procedure. Not all cosmetic surgeons have mastered this delicate skill of placing the implant totally behind the pectoralis muscle of the chest wall.

Because of the natural shape achieved and the reduction in interference with mammograms, this is a preferred method of breast augmentation of many cosmetic surgeons.
